Let's begin by stating one simple fact: A pound of fat burns 2-5 calories per day, while a pound of muscle burns 60.  If you know that you have to burn calories in order to lose weight, what would you rather have working for you - fat or muscle?

Well, the answer is obvious.  Muscle is not only essential to a healthy, lean body, but it will also help you burn fat while you're just sitting around reading the paper.

The body burns calories all the time.  Calories are the essential elements of energy in its most basic form.  We burn them while we're sleeping, while we're working - even while we're eating.  Did you know that digestion burns about 10% of calories from whatever food you're eating?

Here is a simple formula you can use to calculate your protein needs:

For example: a 140lb female who has a calorie intake of 1800 calories per day, with 20% of calories from protein.

1800 x .20 = 360 calories from protein. Since 1 gram of protein = 4 calories, divide protein calories by four, which gives us

360/4 = 90 grams of protein per day.
